アショフ・ホンマ賞は、生物リズム研究分野における若手研究者を奨励する目的で、1984年に制定されました。第1回受賞者は米国のDr. Joseph Takahashi で、1986年の第2回「生物リズムに関する札幌シンポジウム」で表彰されました。その後、2005年まで10名の受賞者と4名の名誉受賞者を顕彰しました。

　顕彰事業は一時中断しておりましたが、新しい財団の設立が決まった2012年に事業を再開しました。2012年から受賞者の年齢制限はなくなりましたが、受賞後も最低10年間は研究活動を持続し、生物リズム研究にさらなる貢献が期待できることが求められました。

　受賞者選考は7名の国際選考委員（委員長・近藤孝男博士）で行なわれましたが、候補者のノミネートは過去の受賞者、3つの関連学会（日本時間生物学会、生物リズム研究学会、ヨーロッパ生物リズム学会）の会長、そして国際選考委会委員が行います。

　　　　The Aschoff and　Honma　Prize　was　instituted　in　1984　to　inspire　young　scientists　in　the　field　of　biological　rhythm research.　The first prize winner was Dr. Joseph Takahashi, who was awarded on an occasion of the 2nd Sapporo Symposium on Biological Rhythm held in 1986.  Since then, the foundation has awarded 10 young scientists and 4 established as honorable prize winners. 

　　　　The selection of prize winner was stopped until the foundation was decided to be renewed in 2012. In the new rule of Aschoff and Honma Prize, the age limitation was abandon, but the prize winner should be expected to be active and contribute to the biological rhythm research for at least 10 years after awarding.

　　　　Selection of the prize winner was conducted by the international selection committee (chairperson: Dr. Takao Kondo).  The previous prize winners, the current presidents of 3 related societies (JSC, SRBR, EBRS) and the members of the international selection committee nominate the candidate for the prize winner.
